The theatrical experience needs to be redefined as people watching "films"with other people. Any place. Any time. Any media.
I believe all public performance screenings should be redefined as "live events/theatrical".
Live because it happens in front of with an audience.
Events not only because it happens at a specific place and time, but because I feel that the future of the theatrical model for independents are screenings that feel like happenings or special term occasions, aka events.
Theatrical because independent filmmakers like to say that they had a theatrical release. It's a term that has been in use for decades; let's not throw it out yet, let's take it back.
My suggestion is to integrate conventional theatrical bookings with alternative/grassroots/community screenings and festival screenings into an overall live event/theatrical release. You should find ways to emphasize the “event” nature of your screenings.
